Description
Ceftriaxone is a medication used to treat bacterial infections, it works by inhibiting the production of the bacterial cell wall causing the cells to lysate or break down. This is in contrast to other antibiotics which target growing cells by interfering with genetic material such as DNA or ribosomal processes. Ceftriaxone is unique compared to other cephalosporin antibiotics in that it has an amino acid backbone made up of six amino acids, with a blend of both D and L configurations. This particular arrangement allows ceftriaxone to exploit a unique entry point into bacterial cells through the cell wall utilizing phospholipids and a process known as transpeptidation.
