Description
Empagliflozin is a drug used to treat adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps restore the body’s response to insulin, a natural hormone that helps control blood sugar levels. Working as a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor, empagliflozin increases the excretion of glucose in the urine, blocking the SGLT-2 proteins responsible for reabsorbing glucose in the kidneys, and thereby helping to lower blood sugar levels.
